MAHABHARAT PART III – PARIKSHIT SAAPA
Parikshit, the grandson of Arjuna ruling the Indraprasta. Hunting is his favourite pastime. Once he has been to forests for hunting and was chasing an animal. Though the animal was hurt, it ran fast and escaped through a hermitage. The particular hermitage is of sage SAMEEKA. The sage is doing tapas under the shade of tree. Parikshit entered into the hermitage, enquired about the animal but the sage is in deep tapas and not answered to king. As already the king is very much tired and thirsty in chasing the animal, lost his patience since the sage is not answered, in anger he saw dead snake in the hermitage and put the dead snake in the neck of sage and went off.
Srungi is the song of sameeka and he is also doing tapas. Krusha one of the sishyas of sage sameeka came to srungi and told about the dead sanke in sameeka’s neck. Srungi got wild and instantaneously he cursed the king Parikshit since my father is aged and doing tapas. The king insulted the sage so he should die due to Takshaka snake bite on seventh day. Then srungi arrived to his father and removed the dead snake from his neck. Due to this the sage Sameeka came to concious and opened his eyes and came to know the arrival of king, placing of dead snake in his neck, and the curse of his son. He was not satisfied with action of his son. He advised that anger will destroy all the tapas like water leaking in a cracked pot. The king is noble and due to his nobility only the sages are doing tapas peacefully. He asked his son to retrovert the saapa but his son accepted his iniability to get back. Immediately, Sameeka sent a word through his sishya to king all the happenings.
King parikshit felt very sorry, and immediately he summoned his assembly of ministers and handedover the kingdom to his son Janamejaya, and arranged single pillar ashrama in a pond and was spending his time in hearing the great stories of Lord to attain mukti.
Takshaka, the snake heard about the curse of Srungi and arriving to Indraprasta. Sage kasyapa also heard the curse and he wanted to save the king from snake bite. Kasyapa is an expert to save people from all snake bites. Both heading to indraprasta. Route is same but with different purposes. Takshaka told kasyapa with pride that he can even burn 1000years old tree but sage kasyapa reiterated that he can bring back the same to normal. Takshaka wanted to know about the power of sage kasyapa and hit bit a big baniyan tree and within no time the tree reduced to ashes. Kasyapa collected the ashes and with his power able to bring back the tree to the same condition. Takshaka astonished and concluded that if kasyapa arrives to Indraprasta, the king will not die. He played trick and lured the sage kasyapa that he will give more than the presents which the king will give and to go back without coming to Indraprasta. Kasyapa for sometime thought over and agreed to accept the presents from Takshaka and went back.
Takshaka came to Indraprasta and seen the arrangements the king made. He summoned his sonson seventh day of curse and told them to reach the king with fruits to present him as young brahmin kids. The brahmin kids arrived near the king and presented the fruits given by takshaka. The king distributed all the fruits to the assembled people there keeping only one fruit. After performing sandhyavandana he wanted to eat the fruit and pierced the same. Initially he saw a small insect in the middle of fruit but ignored. The insect instantaneously grown and bit the king and Parikshit reduced to ashes immediately. All these happened in seconds.
What we should know is that the king Parikshit has not commited any harm but in a fit of anger he insulted the sage. The sage srungi could not control the insult to his father and in anger he cursed the king to death. Here both were in anger and without analysing the situation instantaneously committed the thing. Anger will reduce us to the lowest possible place and always we should keep anger in control. When sage sameeka asked srungi to revert back the curse he could not do so because of his incapability to revert.
It is not necessary to send the sons as brahmin boys to king by snake takshaka. More than this he lured the sage kasyapa with money and sent back him without giving opportunity to save the king.
Sage Kasyapa is a Doctor and his prime duty is to save the people. He accepted the gifts from Takshaka and returned back without performing his basic duty.
Sage Vyaasa, highlighted in this incident that anger is the root cause for destruction and learned should not be lured and go back from their prime duty.
In our present day life we are coming across the above incidents which was shown by Vyaasa long before and cautioned us to be with about type of people.
